50,000 Degrees of Separation...
"I have been working for the city for 15 years and have looked at
thousands of new houses under construction. About 50,000 housing units have
been built .... during that time. Not ONE of them has made more than a minimum effort towards energy efficiency."
These are revealing words from Steve...it really is a battle between gr$$n vs. green.

According to a January American Institute of Architects poll, "90% believe the “people who design and build houses and commercial buildings should try to convince
property owners to use construction materials that protect the environment and building standards that reduce energy consumption even if it costs a little more to do so.”
So there you have it...one of thousands seasoned industry veteran sees the separation between what consumers want and what many builders deliver.
As long as efficiency is an option - it will never happen - the only way to make an immediate and lasting change is to make it mandatory.
Subscribe to Linda Reimer's Magazine - Its a Winner!
In January 2003, Linda Reimer, president of Design Basics Inc., recognized a need to publish a magazine for women in the dreaming or planning stage of building a new home or remodeling their present home. Because research shows 80% of homebuilding and remodeling decisions are made by women,
she was amazed there wasn't a single women's magazine on the newsstand at the time with this focus. It didn't take long for Linda's vision to become concrete. The first issue of Her Home magazine was launched in September of 2003. From the start, Linda's goal was to provide practical
information and a wealth of ideas to help women make these major decisions. Unlike home decoration magazines, Her Home magazine focuses on women's perspectives on design, construction and products for the home, and includes input from leading women homebuilders and industry experts.
Network for Comfort and Energy Use in Buildings

"Maintaining a healthy and comfortable indoor environment in any building requires integrating many components of a complex system. Indoor environment problems are preventable and solvable and practical guidance on how to manage your building for good indoor environmental quality is
available."

Like we have said countless times before...
American voters recently reported Grade School Teachers, Medical Doctors, Police Officers, Accountants and Architects (and interior designers) left favorable impressions whilst Trial Lawyers, Real Estate Developers and Politicians left less than favorable impressions with voters.1
This poll echo's that of a recent Readers Digest poll in Canada which found Doctors, Pharmacist and Teachers at the top of professions consumers trust the most. As others have demonstrated repeatedly, HVAC is all about conditioning ones physiology.
For this reason, I suggest the HVAC industry shift or reposition its role to being part of the healthcare field instead of part of the construction industry. Why? Because the healthcare professions have a different perception of acceptable minimum standards and
consumers trust their advice.
The World Health Organization defines HEALTH "as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Since the work of an HVAC technician has a direct and immediate influence on ones physiology they most definitely -
in my not so humble opinion - fall into the healthcare profession. If you still have a hard time accepting this - check out the
online
forum where we have been posting bits and bites of supporting text. Enjoy and hug your HVAC contractor - they may be saving your life.
