Seminar Part 1: Thermal Comfort in Hot Humid Climates
Seminar Part 2: Exergy Efficiency: The Last Bastion of
Sustainability and Earth Stewardship
Abstract:
Part 1. One would think an entire industry
based on providing comfortable, healthy and safe
environments should be able to easily describe how humans
actually develop perceptions about indoor spaces. But as
strange as it sounds course curriculum and building codes
only address, “the hardware” and completely ignore, “the
software”, that being the human factors. This program is all
about the software and is the missing link connecting bodies
to buildings. Subsection: Elderly, infirm, palliative care
environments.
Part 2. The root of all evil in
sustainability begins with the myth that 1st Law of
Thermodynamics "energy efficiency is the end game". This
conviction is masking the bigger problems associated with
sustainability and reinforcing people beliefs that they are
doing the right thing. In fact every time someone improves
the energy efficiency of a building system, i.e. insulation
and air-tightness etc. (good things) and is associated with
combustion appliances, i.e. power plants, furnaces, boilers,
water heaters etc. the less 2nd Law Thermodynamics “exergy
efficiency” the system becomes (a bad thing) – it’s the
greatest paradox of the 21st century...and an example of
when two rights make a wrong.
