Integrated HVAC Engineering: Mastering Comfort, Health,
and Efficiency.
2017 Home Performance Contracting
Conference
Nashville, TN
Hosted by Home
Performance Coalition
Seminars made possible with funding from Uponor.

Seminar Part 1: Indoor Air Quality 101
Seminar Part 2: Comfort & Diagnostics: How Can Auditors Use
the ASHRAE 55 Standard?
Part I, Abstract: This presentation is for
those who want or need to develop a basic foundation of
knowledge around indoor air quality. It will look at the
fundamentals of moisture management, radon mitigation,
particulate control and managing off gassing from building
materials. An introduction to the human factors will also be
discussed to help participants understand the physiological
systems impacted by the quality of air.
Learning Objectives:
1. Be able to explain the basic fields of study contributing
to indoor air quality
2. Be able to describe four key areas of concern for
occupants
3. Be able to summarize the impacts of poor indoor air
quality on occupant
Part 2, Abstract: Discomfort - Unwanted -
Dead or Alive: clients don’t want hot or cold floors, walls
and ceilings; they don’t want high air velocities and cold
drafts except in summer; and they don’t want dry air nor do
they want to feel muggy. Temperature differences between
surfaces and floor levels are also on their ‘unwanted’ list.
Some occupants are all for adapting in an active house,
others in a passive house, others not so much. From the
Rolling Stones, Street Fighting Man, “But what can a poor
boy do?” Learn to use ASHRAE Standard 55 to diagnose and
mitigate the “unwanted” conditions creating discomfort in
your clients home.
Learning Objectives:
1. Be able to describe the 10 key metrics contributing to
thermal discomfort
2. Be able to explain how discomfort metrics relate to
building performance
3. Be able to perform risk assessment using online comfort
tools
